Count work before and after the answer
The response time shown by the tool is not the task time. Include removing private details, preparing context, uploading material, waiting, fact-checking, rewriting, formatting, and transferring the result. Compare that total with doing the task without AI.
Look for repeated failure patterns
A workflow may still be useful when the same small edit appears each time. It is less useful when the model repeatedly invents reasons, changes important wording, misses exceptions, or produces output that requires line-by-line reconstruction.
- The required context is longer than the work itself.
- Errors look plausible and are difficult to spot.
- The final format breaks when pasted into the destination.
- You keep rewriting the same sections from scratch.
Give yourself permission to stop
Skipping AI is a competent decision. A short personal message, a sensitive conversation, or a task you can complete accurately in five minutes may not need another system in the middle.
